Y5/6 visited the F Pit to launch their topic on Local Mines and Victorian Times. They had the chance to see the original equipment to lower the miners deep underground and raise the coal to the surface. They found out about coal – how it was created and how it was used. They held a piece and couldn’t believe how light and clean it was.
Bill came into to share story of his mining heritage and the lives of miners and their family. The children held artefacts and had a go at using many of them. He taught them songs about mining, which they performed together at the end of the day. The children were fascinated by the fact the miners didn’t wash their backs in case it made them weak!
